Bosch is working on the e-powertrain that will propel future mobility
By the year 2050, two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities. Sustainable urban development depends on viable e-mobility solutions, for which artificial intelligence and machine learning are indispensable. Bosch is developing technologies that will drive the future of mobility in a connected and automated world.
Urbanization and mobility
The landscape of mobility is changing as cities become more densely populated and must contend with evolving mobility needs in addition to environmental stress and space limitations. Electric mobility directly impacts many of these challenges, reducing air and noise pollution for example, but also by playing a role in the sharing economy. On the horizon, driverless vehicles promise to revolutionize how people and goods are transported across distances both short and long. To reach that horizon, Bosch is conducting research on the e-powertrain that will propel future mobility.
Electric vehicles (EV) appear in two main varieties, using either a battery or a fuel cell. The battery works just like in any modern device – it stores power and must be recharged after it is run down. Fuel cells generate electricity to power the car on the spot by converting natural gas into electricity – without burning it. Commercial vehicles in particular, but also vehicles with long-range requirements will utilize mobile fuel cells, while vehicles traveling shorter distances will be powered more often by a battery.
Steer toward connectivity
People who privately own an EV will demand performance, comfort and a competitive price. When assembling a fleet of EV, however, consumers will focus on durability and availability, as well as fail-operational capability, real-life efficiency and total cost of ownership – in addition to comfort.
The increasing market share of electrified vehicles will make dedicated EV platforms commercially feasible and spawn EV-specific chassis concepts. Automated driving will contribute to these concepts with advances in by-wire steering and braking technologies. The e-powertrain of the future runs in a connected world, enabling services across sectors like mobility and power generation.

e-mobility – reimagined
At Bosch, we envision new ways that EV will drive, using the power of connectivity to delegate functions to different systems in the vehicle. That will allow real-time optimization of all systems, such as thermal management – providing better performance. Higher system levels offer additional benefits, connecting intelligent and smart products with new controls, strategies and sensors.
Not only the vehicles themselves will improve, however. A high level of design automation ranging from requirements to delivery of hardware and software and including materials and manufacturing topics will be a key success factor. New material, manufacturing, controls, and design technologies will mutually enable and enforce each other. That will open the door to new e-mobility products and system solutions.
Carbon nanotubes and graphene are examples of new semiconductor and conductor materials that deserve focus. Micro-structured cooling concepts and new assembly techniques with interconnected technology could transform manufacturing. Controls that are fully self-learning and design methods revolutionized by artificial intelligence will lead to a superior mobility experience. Cutting-edge advancements like these continue a long tradition at Bosch of delivering excellent and innovative mobility solutions.
Bosch is doing research on the e-powertrain driven by batteries or mobile fuel cells on both a system level and a component level in a connected and automated world. Novel design methods and control strategies applying artificial intelligence and machine learning as well as new materials and manufacturing technologies will lead to new, optimized, and competitive products that revolutionize the mobility experience.
